Photographing the night sky with the moon
Most people get this wrong because they treat the moon like any other night scene. It isn't. The moon is essentially a sunlit rock sitting in near-total darkness, and that creates a brutal dynamic range problem. If you meter for the sky, the moon becomes a white hole. If you meter for the moon, the rest of the frame goes black. I learned that the hard way on a trip to the Atacama Desert last season, trying to capture the Milky Way behind a waxing gibbous moon. For the sky portion, it's a completely different calculation. ISO 1600 to 6400, f/2.8 wide open, and exposures between 15 and 30 seconds depending on how much light pollution you're dealing with. Here's the thing most guides miss: you generally can't capture both the moon and the Milky Way in a single well-exposed frame unless you're shooting at a very thin crescent phase when the moon isn't dominating the sky. My workaround for the Atacama situation was to bracket aggressively. I shot the moon at 1/250s f/8 ISO 100, then immediately switched to 25s at f/2.8 ISO 3200 for the sky, and repeated both sequences three times each. Back in post, I blended the sky exposures under the moon mask. It took about twelve minutes total in Lightroom and Photoshop, which is actually faster than trying to get it right in-camera.
Common pitfalls that waste hours
Autofocus will fail you every time in low light. Switch to manual focus and use live view zoom to confirm sharpness on a bright star or the moon's edge. Another issue that catches people off guard: the moon moves. At 600mm, a 30-second exposure will show noticeable drift. Keep your lunar exposures under 2 seconds if you're using long focal lengths, or use an equatorial mount to track. Light pollution is the silent killer of night sky shots. Even in seemingly dark areas, summer skyglow from distant cities can wash out the Milky Way entirely. I check Bortle scale ratings before every trip and target sites rated 4 or lower. If you're stuck in a suburban backyard, you can still photograph the moon with reasonable detail, but don't expect nebulae or galactic core visibility.
When this approach doesn't work
Night photography with the moon is fundamentally limited by the moon's phase. During a full moon, the sky around it is so bright that anything beyond the lunar landscape gets washed out. This isn't a gear problem — it's physics. The only real alternative is to wait for a new moon or very thin crescent phase and compose without the moon, or accept that the moon will be present but the sky details around it will be minimal. Some photographers use narrowband filters to combat this, but those add significant complexity and cost for marginal gains in most situations. If you're just starting out, practice with the moon alone first. Get clean, sharp lunar shots before layering in sky detail. The skills don't transfer as smoothly as people claim.
